Impact of Scholarship

The Production of High Quality, Impactful Intellectual Contributions

Feng Chia University is dedicated to innovative education and focuses on not only basic research, but also the application of theory and the teaching and learning scholarship. Based on the college’s mission, our faculty members engage in research, including teaching practice research, academic research, and apply research findings to teaching fields and industry development. To encourage faculty members to publish research papers, we have established “Granting Rules for Teacher Submissions” to provide subsidies for manuscript submission fees, publication fees, or editing fees. FCU also has a policy for rewarding faculty research, which awards bonuses and certificates for published works (including journal articles, case studies, and books). Faculty members can also choose to exchange the bonus for a reduction in teaching hours. FCU regularly announces and updates information on predatory journals on the library website to maintain academic integrity. Our college places a strong emphasis on academic honesty and frequently reminds faculty members to exercise caution when selecting journals for paper submissions. The college does not provide any subsidies for papers submitted to predatory journals as our goal is to foster a culture of rigorous research and ethical conduct.

From 2018 to 2023, our faculty members published a total of 806 journal articles, including 337 A-level, 204 B-level, and 208 C-level publications, with the remainder being D-level and E-level publications. In addition, we published 543 conference papers and 30 books. The academic works published by our faculty members have been highly cited by peers in the academic community and have provided reliable references and recommendations for emerging issues and industry development.

[1]    Professor Tsang-Yao Chang from the Department of Finance and Banking was ranked in the top 2% pf the world’s scientists for 2021 and 2022.

[2]    Professor Wan-Shu Chen, from the Department of Statistics, collaborated with Professor S. Lee from Seoul National University in South Korea, Professor M. Taniguchi from Waseda University in Japan, and Dr. Meng-Chiang Tong from FCU to conduct the study entitled "What Factors Drive Citizens' Satisfaction with Government Responses to COVID-19?" This study investigated the key factors that influenced citizens' satisfaction with their governments' handling of the COVID-19 pandemic across major economies worldwide. The findings, published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases, serve as a valuable reference for governments seeking to improve their response to the ongoing pandemic.

[3]    Professor Shen-Ming Lee from the Department of Statistics participated in a clinical data analysis conducted by a team from the National Research Institute of Chinese Medicine under the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Tri-Service General Hospital, and Taichung Veterans General Hospital. The team studied the use of NRICM101, the first Chinese medicine approved for treating COVID-19 in Taiwan. The clinical data analyzed were obtained from 33 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and treated at the two medical centers; 12 of these patients were older, had more severe symptoms, and had been hospitalized for 21 days without improvement. Within 9 days of taking NRICM101, they tested negative for COVID-19 three times in a row and experienced no side effects. The article was also published in the international pharmaceutical field journal Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy, providing reference recommendations for governments in their use of medication.

Thought Leadership

Our college defines thought leadership as experts in their field whose insights and opinions are highly valued by both peers and followers. They use their expertise and knowledge to shape industry trends, drive innovation, and inspire others to think differently about their work.

(1)    Thought leadership of faculty

To echo the Goal 2 of our college to sustain focus on cultivating research talents in business innovation and sustainable development, our college published two academic journals including International Journal of Business and Economics (IJBE) and Journal of Economics and Management(JEM).

IJBE is a refereed journal established in 2002 and indexed by EconLit(including the Journal of Economic Literature), RePEc, EBSCO, ProQuest, and Cabell's. IJBE has published over 20 volume for the past two decades with a total of more than 250 peer-reviewed papers.

Journal of Economics and Management is an internationally refereed journal, established in January 2005 and indexed by EconLit (including the Journal of Economic Literature), RePEc, EBSCO, ProQuest, and Cabell's. JEM has published 19 volume for almost 20 years with a total of more than 200 peer-reviewed papers.

(2)    Thought leadership of faculty

To apply both faculty members’ and students’ research and learning achievements to business practices and help companies improve and solve problems, our college initiated a national Sustainability and Smart Innovation Hackathon in 2020. Eight universities in Central Taiwan were invited to co-organize the event. The competition began with a workshop in which teachers instructed students on the basic knowledge and problem-solving skills required. Companies then raised a business problem, disclosing important and urgent decisional contexts they were facing. Students from different disciplinary backgrounds formed teams to conduct research and analysis on the issue of the chosen company. On the day of the competition, teams presented their proposals to the reviewers, which included representatives from the companies, university professors, and other professionals. The winning team members were employed as interns or full-time employees at companies.

For example, in 2020, the largest-scale property developer in Taiwan, the Sinyi Real Estate Group, proposed the issue of “how to improve and enhance the corporate social responsibility contribution of the Sinyi Real Estate Group.” The competition attracted teams from universities nationwide, and the winning team was composed of students from our college, among others. Students also gained internship opportunities at the Sinyi Real Estate Group. In recent years, the Sinyi Real Estate Group has been a distinguished representative in the field of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Taiwan. After participating in our college’s Sustainability and Innovation Hackathon and collaborating with our outstanding faculty and students, the Sinyi Real Estate Group won the 2022 Asian Corporate Social Responsibility Award (AREA), also known as the “Sustainable Nobel Prize.” Chairman Liu Yuanzhi of the Sinyi Real Estate Group is also a graduate of our college’s Department of International Business and will be honored as an outstanding alumnus of our college in 2023. These achievements demonstrate our college’s thought leadership in teaching and collaborating with industries.

Three students from BIBA at our college participated in the Hult Prize case competition in 2021, focusing on the annual theme of “Food For Good.” Their team presented the "Green 24" plan, which involves obtaining fresh but aesthetically imperfect food from farmers and transforming it into boxed meals using unmanned vending machines as a solution to food waste. By collaborating with vending machine lessors and implementing their creative ideas in practical production and sales, they aim to make the world a better place with passion and innovation.

Our college is committed to promoting ESG and achieving the United Nations’ SDGs. As part of this commitment, we invited former Taiwan Auditor General, Professor Lin Ching-Long, to be a visiting professor and signed the “University Sustainable Development Initiative” with Ambassador Chien Yu-Hsin, Chairman of the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy. Together, we actively promote sustainable development in universities and corporate sustainable concepts. In addition, we co-organize the Sustainable Management Professional Certificate Training Course to cultivate sustainable management professionals. The course is designed for middle and top management professionals from various fields, including education, finance, accounting, auditing, technology, traditional industries, and tourism. The training includes two major types of modules: key knowledge and abilities development for management professionals and practical operation for management professionals.

The curriculum is structured to cover development trends, standard specifications, evaluation indicators, counseling practices, and case exercises to help learners effectively absorb and develop professional knowledge while integrating their personal practical experience into practical CSR capabilities. The training enables participants to deepen their understanding of the core concepts and international trends of corporate sustainability/corporate social responsibility, master various standard specifications, and become familiar with practical CSR case studies. To date, 157 participants have attended the training, with 134 of them successfully passing the exam to obtain the Certified Sustainable Management Professional (CSMP) certification. FCU has funded dedicated teachers, including Dr. Wen-Chun Tsai from the Department of Business Administration and Dr. Yi-Fang Chiang from the Department of Cooperative Economics and Social Entrepreneurship, to obtain the certification and offer sustainability-related courses in our college.

(3)    Thought leadership of  our students

Our Ph.D. Program in Business, Ph.D. Program in Finance, PMBA, and EMBA are designed to cultivate high-level management talents. Our students are currently in middle to senior management positions in various companies. Through our curriculum, which includes the understanding of business management theory, recognition of emerging issues, and practical exercises on solving business problems, our students can apply the knowledge they learned during their studies to develop concrete industry development strategies. After graduation, they can participate in industry association elections and be elected as the chairman of the association, leading the industry to move forward. Some examples of our successful alumni include:

(1)The college has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Institute of Management Accountants to jointly cultivate professionals in management accounting and strategic management practices

The Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), which holds a global leadership position in the fields of management accounting and financial management, visited our college on December 15, 2022, to engage in a dialogue and exchange with accounting professionals. In order to encourage outstanding students at the college to enter the management accounting industry and meet the demand for talent in corporate finance, our college signed a memorandum of cooperation with the IMA on September 10, 2021. The IMA provides scholarships, free course resources, and examination opportunities for 10 students each year, allowing them to obtain international certifications such as the American CMA and CSCA within three years. This will enable students to apply financial planning management and decision analysis to the workplace, narrow the skills gap between businesses and schools, and help students gain a competitive advantage in the job market. In the future, the College of Business and Finance will continue to work closely with the IMA in strategic management practices and interdisciplinary talent development, creating a win–win situation for both businesses and students. This project is a new initiative that will be implemented starting from 2022. Currently, seven students have been approved for the program and are preparing for the certification exam.

(2)Feng Chia University collaborates with the Taiwan Tourism Factory Association to promote the international marketing of the tourism industry

The college signed a cooperation agreement with Taiwan Tourism Factory Association in 2022. The faculty and students worked together on three courses—Industry Tour, Smart Technology and Business Innovation, and Business Innovation Projects—to build digital marketing platforms for tourism factories. These outcomes encompass the effectiveness in international marketing, marketing planning for LINE official accounts, and micro-movie production and publicity. In total, five domestic micro-movies and 32 international micro-movies in multiple languages were uploaded to YouTube, while six LINE official accounts were developed and marketed through message content push design, interface design, backend member tag management, LINE bot keyword setting and response content design, LINE sticker design, and marketing plans. These initiatives have further enhanced the factory’s brand exposure and conversion rate, promoted customized marketing, and helped the tourism factories expand into new markets and customer groups.

(3)Supporting Sustainable Environment and Green Circular Economy: Industry–Academia Collaboration Signed Joint Declaration for Sustainable Development of Tourism Industry

The dean of our college, Dr. Chiang Hsiang-Tsai, and the director of the Center for Sustainable Business Development, Dr. Lin Qinglong, together with Mr. Hsu Li-Sheng, the chairman of the Taiwan Tourism Factory Association, initiated the Tourism Industry Sustainable Development Joint Declaration Signing Ceremony held on March 19, 2022.
